    Hello Deaf Chipmunk

I did not know that both look like “exchanged” to like exile.
That strange coincidence(spelling??) but I love to watch your vlog about deaf and ASL culture issue. You understand that I am from United States. I ask you and wonder “Can I buy that title of this book “DEAF HERITAGE IN CANADA” in USA?? If you say “yes” then where I can find that book. Maybe I buy to order through book from Canada.
    Alright
    GOOD VLOG!!!

Thank you for sharing the Deaf Canadian history. I will find and buy the “Deaf Heritage in Canada” book to add to my library at home. Deaf related history books tells us a lot of things we do not know. This is a valuable history book which we can carry down to the next generation.

    Again, thank you.

National Association of the Deaf (NAD) http://www.nad.org
NAD was established in Cincinnati, Ohio on August 25, 1880.. The three co-
founders are Robert McGregor of Ohio (first president); Edwin Hodgson of New York
(first vice-president) and Edmund Booth of Iowa. NAD was incorporated in 1950 in

    Interesting!!

Not surprisingly, there is a lot of similarity and close connection between USA and Canadian Deaf communities.

Part of this is because there is a regularly occurring crossover of people for school, college or employment purposes and exchange of information and social contacts. Notables have been the Peikoffs and the Wicks (and even Alexander Graham Bell himself!)

    Dianrez,

Not to mention Laurent Clerc whom Harlan Lane mentions in a compendium of the deaf history in “When the Mind Hears” (1984), p. 251. Clerc personally trained Ronald McDonald who started the Quebec school in 1800s.

    Hi Stephen!

It is great that you have decided to add Deaf History of Canada to your library. To make it easier for you to order… here is http://www.deafculturecentre.ca/public/estore/estorehome.aspx

That is as simple as possible… USA and Canada have a lot in common more than we have ever thought.

    Dianrez!

It was great to meet you in California at least one month ago… You are definitely right that Canada and USA have a lot in common as I mentioned in my response to Stephen. Know what, AGBell’s old home in Brantford area was my neighbour for around 2 years. I have never visited the place because it haunts me!

    Jean Boutcher,

Yes the school building where Ron McDonald taught is still very much alive. I saw the picture and it is still in good condition. I could not believe it. I did not realize Clerc himself trained Ronald McDonald…. What a small world, isn’t it!

Thanks for mentioning that and I am gonna check the “When the Mind Hears”…

    Hi Paul,

Thanks for adding two more founders/fathers of NAD. I did not mean to offend two others. I just got information from the book. Yes first NAD board members deserved recognition as co founders. One of them happened to be Canadian!

We all can learn from that and we keep pushing all the way…

    Thanks Paul

That’s ok – the whole board can share the spotlight.

Before you mentioned it, I thought for more than 30 years that Robert McGregor founded NAD and OHAD (now Columbus Colony). He was living in Ohio at that time and unfortunately killed by automobile while walking on Sunbury Road.

The bottom line is that NAD is still evolving today and doing more advocacy. We can share our pride in it.

    You are welcome, Deafchip

    Paul
