I also agree with this. I like what Jean B said about Swedish parents being required to know sign language if their child is deaf. What a support system for their child! I fully agree with parents being required to learn sign language if they have a deaf child. I have a friend who is partially deaf and has lost most of her hearing in the last few years. She has 4 children and because she knows she will soon lose 100% of her hearing, the entire family is now in sign language classes. Despite the support from her family, she feels distant from her friends now as she cannot communicate like she could a few years ago. Signing is a beautiful language and a great resource to be knowledgeable of! I hope all schools in the USA and Canada offer this as a second language sooner than later.

Hi Antonia,

I am so glad that I totally agree with your argument about difference and deficiency. You said it all perfectly. I wish people who see any of us regardless of who we are in positive view. Unfortunately, it does not happen on our earth.

Thanks again

It is true that the assumption of a lack, a deficit, instead of a DIFFERENCE is at the core of oppressive actions. Deaf have exactly the same struggle indigenious peoples have because sign IS an authentic indigenious linguistic tradition shared by a distinct culture. Oppression is maintained by peoples refusal to believe patterns of dismissal, barriers & rationalizations are the very thumbprint of its poison. It will be a good day when films illuminate this history & make it recognizable to all people because the AMA & others have an agenda against the genetic range of human diversity (we have seen this before, in WwII). It is detrimental to humankind at large, and potentially devastating to us in Deaf community.

Thank you for this synopsis of ASL history -- it is so important for us to understand that ASL originates naturally from Deaf people. This is the difference between ASL and Signed English.

I used to feel confused about the origin of French Sign Language because I thought the the Abbe L'Epee made up the language and taught it to Deaf children. Then I studied a little better, and read the brought Deaf children together to the first Deaf institute in France, so that he could teach them a manual alphabet and a hand sign system.

But it was the Deaf children themselves who created it into an actual language. It developed through their living together, playing together and sharing their own stories together. It was not created by a hearing person -- but just as you pointed out -- a hearing person did help make it possible by creating a Deaf school that brought Deaf children together.

I know that you and your readers already know all this history, but I wanted to repeat it again. This history was important for me to learn, so that I could understand why children in America need their own language, ASL.

I very much enjoyed your video. Thank you again for sharing it. I hope the story of ASL will be told again and again, so that no one forgets where American Sign Language came from.

Hi RLM,

Thanks for your response. I am not sure if I have time to provide a rough translation. I will try but I cannot promise at this moment.

You are right that it would help non ASL people be aware of what's going on!

Thanks and take care
